The second half will be a more traditional writing workshop: each student will submit up to 25 pages of work and get written feedback from the instructor as well as from the class. In this hybrid craft and reading seminar/workshop we'll spend the first three weeks reading short stories and excerpts, creating a language for talking and thinking about other people's writing as writers: what can we learn once we pick apart the work of other writers and begin to make sense of how their work was put together? How can we re-consider our own work within the context of choices and their consequences? How can we learn to talk about how to put the pieces together that are necessary to make a solid whole? We will spend a portion of each of these classes using our conversations as jumping off points to generate our own work, doing guided writing exercises and working to have the beginning of a draft.
